Translations
Been watching more translated Anime lately. Assuming the voice acting is decent in the dub, I usually watch the dubbed version first, and then watch again with the subtitled version. Between the two I tend to get a much better sense of what’s going on than I would with either alone.
I’ve come to the conclusion that translations generally ought to be done by a team of two people: one native speaker of the original language, and one native speaker of the target language.
This way, the translator who is a native speaker of the target language can correct the other’s usage and idioms, and the translator who is a native speaker of the original language can ensure that the sense of the translation doesn’t deviate too far from the original.
