Universalis: Liturgy of the Hours

[ religious geekery follows ]

The Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Divine Office) is the richest single prayer resource of the Christian Church. It provides prayers, psalms and meditation for every hour of every day. It has existed from the earliest times, to fulfil the Lord’s command to pray without ceasing. Never monotonous, always new, it provides the means for the whole world, united, to pray together and sanctify every hour of every day of every year…

These folks have put together an online version of the Liturgy of the Hours which automatically assembles the prayers and readings for a particular day (a task most newbies find a bit daunting with the dead tree version).

The site has a little bit about the liturgy’s structure as well. If you’ve read a bit of medieval fiction and wondered about the “Lauds”, “Vespers”, “Compline”, and “Matins” business the monks were on about, the site can give you a taste.

But the Divine Office isn’t peculiar to the middle ages, or to those with religious vocations. It’s an ancient Christian practice which continues to this day, though its modern form is much friendlier for the layperson with a schedule.
