Pope to Change DnD Cosmology
Heh. It seems the Pope putting the final nail in the coffin of the theological hypothesis of Limbo will have rather profound and wide-reaching consequences.
On a serious note, I suppose the real upcoming decision illustrates an important distinction within Catholic belief; there are those teachings which have been infallibly defined to be true (and by definition cannot change), and there are also those teachings which have not been infallibly defined, but which Catholics accept to be true on the basis of the Church’s authority to teach them.
Then, in a whole other category, there are those speculations (like Limbo) which may be very popular for a long period of time for whatever reason. This distinction is why Limbo - dispite its historical importance - never made an appearance in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Popularity, thankfully, has no bearing on whether something is true or not.
I have to say, though, that I would prefer the Catholic Limbo to the DnD one. Eesh.
