Evolution and the Church
Okay, that was going to have been my last religious entry for a while. But then Slashdot had to take a potshot at Cardinal Schoenborn’s op-ed piece in the NYT.
In a nutshell, my understanding of the Catholic position is: if you’re arguing the existence or non-existence of God, you’ve left the bounds of science (*cough* Intelligent Design *cough*). Similarly, if you’re attempting to describe the order and evolution of the natural world as such, you’ve left the proper province of religion.
Anyway, Zenit has an interview with Father Edward Oakes (part 1) (part 2) regarding Shoenborn’s op-ed piece, elaborating on the above and offering some fascinating rationale/commentary.
For reference, the “magisterium” Fr. Oakes refers to is the proper term for the Church’s collective teaching authority.
