Linux PowerTOP
Just released, Linux PowerTOP is like
top(1), except that it displays the power consumption of
processes rather than their usage of CPU time.
I guess this satisfies another one of the “predictions” I recorded in last year’s post, The Next Ten Years in Programming:
We will see the beginnings of hardware and software infrastructure for energy accounting similar to that available for CPU time….
Like many of my “predictions”, it’s knowingly made a few years too late: there have been power profiling tools and hardware cropping up since the turn of the millennium at least; it’s just a question of when they become mainstream.
