Abu Ghraib Abandoned
I’m glad to see that the US has finally decided to vacate Abu Ghraib, but we never should have used that haunted place to begin with.
The administration’s coyness about torture and former General Karpinski’s total abdication of leadership were sufficiently bad together, but setting up shop in a prison that was both location and symbol of some of the worst abuses of Saddam’s rule was an open invitation to trouble.
Walls have memories.
Update: In other words, imagine what would have happened if the Stanford Prison Experiment had been conducted in a facility which had been designed and used as a torture center for decades, rather than in the basement of the Stanford psychology department.
