True Lemon

Random: When I was on the bus trip to New York, they were giving out samples of this lemon-in-a-packet stuff. At first I made fun of it a lot, but then I tried it and it’s not bad with tea or in a bottle of water or something.

It’s apparently the invention of a Baltimore native; anyone out there seen it showing up in other locations yet? I’m getting kind of addicted to the stuff now… ^^;

Update: Razvan writes:

This is a very common product AFAIK, usually called lemon salt. You should be able to find it in any foodstore, at the cookie powders (or whatever the name if for the place where they have powders used to bake cookies) dept. As you might already suspect, it’s used for home made cookies and such.

As far as I can tell, marketing differences aside (TL is usually shelved with iced tea stuff), the two products appear to be pretty similar.

However, TL does use lactose rather than salt as a base to hold the lemon oil, so you probably wouldn’t want to make a margarita with it. Similarly, I’m not sure how well lemon salt would work for making lemonade (anyone out there tried it?).

Update: nicu corrected me, saying that lemon salt doesn’t actually contain salt. Unfortuately I’ve not yet been able to find any in stores around here to find out what IS in it.

Update: nicu writes again—this may have been a translation issue; the proper translation from Romanian is probably “citrate salt”; e.g. calcium citrate. Which is quite different to TL, as the latter contains lemon oil rather than just citric acid.
