First Polygamous Civil Union in the Netherlands
Doesn’t look like it’s really hit the US press yet, but I’ve been told that the Netherlands have seen their first polygamous civil union. I’ll see if I can scare up a proper English translation…
Polygamous marriage, as such, is not permitted in the Netherlands, but the limitations for civil union there are sufficiently relaxed that I’m a bit surprised nobody had tried that route sooner.
Certainly, the participants consider it a marriage and dressed traditionally for the occasion. If civil unions are treated as de-facto marriages, then any legal definition of “marriage” loses meaning.
