New Earth

Just finished watching the first episode of the second season of Doctor Who, New Earth. Not perfect, but pretty darn good, and gave the actors quite a lot of room to show off their chops. After the rather flaccid season 1 ending he’d written, I think Russell T. Davies has redeemed himself as a writer for the series.

Update: Just a few more assorted thoughts: One, RTD is apparently not very technically-minded, and it shows. But in this episode he was generally being deliberately silly (Marconi’s Syndrome, heh) so the hand-waving was fine. Secondly, while I find myself wishing he would have given the alien nuns habits that weren’t so directly influenced by Catholic orders, I was impressed with the strong pro-life message in places. Fourth, I’m still not sure what to think of the decision to use the Islamic crescent (and yes, given the color and orientation, it definitely was) as the universal hospital symbol.
